Volleyball Completes Perfect Weekend at Barry University Classic

Bucs go 3-0 in home tournament; host NCAA runner-up PBA Friday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's volleyball team put together a perfect weekend at the Barry University Classic -- the first home tournament since 2002. The Buccaneers won two matches Saturday to go 3-0 in the home tournament.

Barry beat Southern Connecticut State, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, Saturday in its first match. The Bucs (6-1) wrapped up the weekend with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-16, 25-23 win over Lees-McRae.

In the first match, the Buccaneers had 47 kills and 27 errors. Southern Connecticut State finished with 31 kills and 26 errors.

Tied 18-18 in the first set, Jaeda Allen's kill started a seven-point run to put the Bucs up 1-0. Two Owls ballhandling errors and an attack error and three kills by Allen highlighted the Bucs' surge.

Southern Connecticut State built a 23-17 lead on Gabriela Vazquez's kill before the Bucs used a putaway by Ivana Didanovic to start another late-set run -- this one a six-point Bucs surge -- that knotted the score at 23-23. Kaitlin Drake's ace tied the score. But a kill by Vazquez and ace by Bridgette Walsh gave the Owls (4-5) the set to tie the match at 1-1.

The Owls took a 7-3 lead in the third set on a kill by Faith Ford.  Juliana Tirabassi served the Bucs to four straight points, punctuated by an ace that put Barry ahead, 8-7. Deadlocked at 12-12, Barry went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead. Kristina Filimonova's kill kept the Bucs on top by seven, and two aces by Allen and a kill by Drake gave the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Owls hit -.135 in the third set, managing five kills and 10 errors. Barry had nine kills and seven errors.

The Bucs jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the final set on a kill by Didanovic. Filimonova put away two kills, and Kishara Gordon banged down a setup from Brooke Speyerer as the Bucs extended the lead to 20-11. Southern Connecticut State cut it to 21-16 on a kill by Ford, but Drake pounded a kill to make it 23-16 and Didanovic finished off a setup from Maegan Cuesta to seal the deal.

Drake had nine kills, five aces and 12 digs. Filimonova had nine kills and four blocks. Allen had eight kills and four aces. Eva Raat had seven kills, and Didanovic seven kills and four blocks. Jenny Trinidad and Tirabassi each had 16 assists, and Ariel Mangum 27 digs for the Bucs.

Against Lees-McRae, Barry got out to a 20-12 lead in the opening set when Filiminova put away one of Speyerer's 13 assists. Didanovic's kill led to three straight service points by Cuesta to move Barry up, 24-14. Following a Bobcats sideout, the Bucs secured the first set on a Lees-McRae attack error.

Lees-McRae jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set and remained in control throughout. Cuesta came on to serve with the Bucs trailing by seven late, ripping off four straight service points to pull within 23-20, but the Bobcats capitalized on back-to-back Bucs attack errors to tie the match at a set apiece.

Barry took a 10-6 lead in the third set on a kill by Drake. The Bucs extended the lead to 15-10 on Mangum's ace. Filimonova converted a set from Cuesta to bump Barry on top, 20-12. Kills by Allen and Genesis Castillo on Trinidad's serve made it 24-14 before the Bobcats grabbed the next two points. But Brittany Reynolds slammed home set point to push the Buccaneers in front 2-1 in the match.

The Bucs hit .348 in the third set, putting away 13 of 23 attacks with five errors. The Bobcats hit .444 with nine kills and one error in 18 swings. Barry converted 13 of 17 sideouts for 76 percent.
