MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry's men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to steal the win from the visiting Bobcats Saturday night.
Both teams battled in the first half, but neither side could find the back of the net.
Barry's Thomas Coombes, had a chance to put the Bucs on the board with 23 minutes left in the first half with a penalty kick, but Bobcat goalie, Connor Christie, dove to the same side as the kick to keep the half scoreless.
Bobcat's forward, Federico Moronell, scored a brace in the first nine minutes of the second half to take the lead. The first goal came in the 48th minute, unassisted in the 18 yard box. Moronell dribbled his way through Barry's defense and placed a driven shot past Barry's keeper, Michael Scheraldi, to take the lead 1-0. Minutes later, Moronell found the back of the net again. Abraham Bibas crossed the ball into the 18 yard box from about 35 yards away on a free kick to meet Moronell, who leaped the highest out of the mass of bodies crowding the goal keeper, to head the ball into the back of the net.
Barry rallied back however, scoring three goals in a span of nine minutes.
Patrick Borchert started the rally for the Bucs with a goal in the 59th minute. Borchert scored off of a header from a corner kick from senior, Nyle Patel. Minutes later, Patel recorded his third goal of the season off an assist from forward, Thomas Coombes. Coombes beat a defender down the right side of the field, and brought the ball all the way to the goal line, where he crossed the ball to Patel, and Patel knocked the ball into the net to knot the game 2-2. Coombes then scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute when he headed the ball into the net from Patel's corner kick to take the 3-2 lead.
Moronell almost equalized the score with just five minutes remaining in the match, but his shot was blocked by the Buc's defense.
Scheraldi made seven saves to record his third win on the season, while Christie takes the loss, despite making eight saves for the Bobcats. The Bucs also held an 18-11 edge in shots over the visiting Bobcats.
The Bucs hit the pitch again Saturday Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. as the hit the road against Embry-Riddle.
