DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers improve to 5-0 on the season after defeating Embry-Riddle 6-2 on Saturday night.
The Eagles took the early lead in the 15th minute with a goal from junior forward, Daniel Gylfason, off of a corner kick.
The lead only lasted about 20 minutes as the Bucs came back to score three goals before the end of the first half.
Senior forward, Thomas Coombes, started the swarm of goals with a goal in the 36th minute to knot the match 1-1. Coombes received the ball from Frank Lustig, where he then started to dribble toward the oncoming defender and pushed it by the defender to where he met it about 12 yards away from goal, and poked it by the keeper. Defender, Mitchell Smith, took the lead for the Bucs with his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute, after being assisted by Pablo Georgakopoulos. Georgakopoulos took a free kick from about 35 yards out, serving a bending cross that Mitch headed home from within the 18. Nyle Patel set up teammate, Hanno Antoni, as he popped the ball over the back line, and Antoni won the footrace with the keeper to get to the ball first to lift the ball over the keeper to score just 1:03 later. Antoni's goal turned out to be the game-winning goal of the match.
Moriba Ballah scored in the 60th minute for the Eagles to trim the lead to 3-2. Ballah's goal was assisted by Gylfason.
The Bucs officially closed the runway for the night by adding another three goals before the end of the second half. Sergio Yepes scored the fourth goal of the night for the Bucs in the 64th minute. Hanno served the ball to Yepes, who then beat two defenders and slotted the ball past the keeper.
Coombes scored in the 70th minute when Antoni slipped the ball through defenders to meet Coombes's feet, where he beat the keeper from about eight yards out, racking in his second goal of the match. Coombes hasn't had trouble finding the back of the net this season as he's scored seven goals in just five matches.
In the 79th minute, Yepes received the ball down the middle of the field from Maurice Padula, then Yepes split two defenders at the top of the 18 and made his way closer to the net, where he drilled the ball into the net to finish the Eagles off 6-2.
The Bucs held a 10-4 edge over the Eagles for shots on goal during the match. Michael Scheraldi saved two of those shots to record his fourth win of the season. Richard Dearle took the loss for the Eagles after making four saves.
Barry's men's soccer team hit the road again on Wednesday Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. against Lynn to start conference play.
