Bucs to meet Blazers for second time this season

Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's tennis team beat Florida Southern, 5-0, Sunday in the NCAA Division II South Region 2 semifinals at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The second-seeded Buccaneers (14-6) will host third-seeded Valdosta State (16-6) at 11 a.m. Monday to decide the region championship. The winner advances to the NCAA Championships in Denver.

Barry got out to a quick start when sixth-ranked Ahmed Triki and Renato Lombardi beat Jose de Sario and Brian Slivonik, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Playing in their first match together, Fabian Pronnet and Flavio Matteoli combined for an 8-4 victory over Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Oscar Soderlund at the No. 2 position. Franco Echenique and Nico Dreer held off Fabian Lundberg and Arthur Viallaneix, winning 8-6 at No. 3 pairs to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead in the match.

It didn't take long for the Buccaneers seal the deal as Triki, who is ranked No. 3 in the country, coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lundberg at No. 1 singles to move Barry within a point of clinching. Echenique did just that, beating Soderlund, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 position to wrap it up.

At No. 2 singles, 26th-ranked Dreer pulled out a tiebreaker in the first set and was up a game on de Sario in the second when Echenique clinched. Lombardi won the first set, 7-5, over Alvarez-Hevia at No. 4 singles. Daniel Ventura took the opening set from Viallaneix, 6-4, at the No. 5 position. After dropping the first set, 27th-ranked Pronnet led Slivonik, 2-1, in the second set.

The win was No. 7-ranked Barry's second shutout over the 45th-ranked Moccasins (14-11) this season. It set up a second date against the Blazers, whom the Bucs pulled out a 5-4 win against earlier this year in Miami Shores.
