WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers were blanked 2-0 and 1-0 in a doubleheader sweep by the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday at Simpson Field on the Rinker Athletic Campus.
The Bucs (22-17) had 12 hits in the twinbill, to just nine for the Sailfish, but PBA drew five walks to just one for the Bucs. Outside of Sam Busekrus, who went 2-for-3, the Bucs were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and 0-for18 with runners on base. Busekrus had four hits for the Bucs, while Cheyanne Head and Kayla Ogle each had two.
The Bucs were shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since losing 1-0 to Florida Southern and 2-0 to Tampa in the 2012 NCAA South Region Tournament. It's the first time Barry has been blanked in a doubleheader since Mar. 8, 1990 when Bridgeport won 3-0, 1-0 in a twinbill.
FIRST GAME
The Sailfish (34-15) scored one in the first and one in the third. In the first, Theresa Butler knocked in Maddie Bertisch, who had walked, with a single through the left side. In the third, Bertisch again walked and scored on a error after a sacrifice.
Rachel Hill (13-7) scattered seven hits to earn the4 shutout, striking out seven. Lynsey Duncan (1-4) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks in six innings.
SECOND GAME
In the second game, Barry's Anieliesa Palmiero (10-5) set down the first 10 batters she faced and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
The Bucs had runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but could not push one across against Amber Johnson (15-1).
The Sailfish finally scored in the eighth inning. Devin Williams led off with a double, just the third hit allowed by Palmeiro, and went to third on an illegal pitch. She scored on a fly ball by S.J. Collier.
Johnson scattered five hits and a walk and struck out two to earn the win. Palmiero walked one and struck out two in the complete game loss.
The Bucs close the season next weekend against the Lynn Knights. The Bucs will recognize the seven seniors in a ceremony between games.
