MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry's baseball team closed out its final weekend home series of the season, taking two out of three games from Rollins after splitting Saturday's doubleheader. The Buccaneers won the first game, 8-5, before dropping the nightcap, 11-10.
In Saturday's opener, the Buccaneers (22-21, 6-12 Sunshine State Conference) jumped out to a quick lead, scoring once in the first off a
Ryan Baldwin RBI double. They added to their lead in the fourth when
Mike Diaz doubled to left, bringing in
Julian Abreu. Rollins (22-21, 7-13) took a one-run lead in the fifth on a three-run home run to left field.
The Bucs responded in the bottom of the inning when
Jonathan Quintana hit his fourth home run of the season to put Barry back up, 4-3. Quintana scored in the seventh on a throwing error, and doubled in the eighth to bring in
Alexander DeGoti.Â
Ramon Valdez also scored on a throwing error, following a sac bunt by Abreu. The Tars homered in the ninth, but it wasn't enough.
Bucs starter
Jonathan Hernandez improved to 6-0, after giving up three runs, nine hits and two walks, while fanning six batters in seven innings. Tars starter Brad Case (3-3) took the loss in a four-inning, three-strikeout outing after yielding four runs, seven hits and six walks. Bucs closer
Nate Greve earned his first save of the year, allowing two runs on two hits, and striking out one over the final two innings.
In the nightcap, the Tars raced out to a 5-0 lead after three innings before the Bucs responded, tying the game when Valdez drove in a run, Baldwin had a two-run double to right, and Abreu cranked his first home run of the year to right center on the second pitch he saw in the fourth inning. Rollins regained control with three runs in the fifth, but in the bottom half of the inning, Abreu homered again to trim the Tars lead to 8-6.
Rollins added three more runs, only to watch the Bucs put together a ninth-inning rally when Valdez belted a three-run homer to right, and
Frank Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to right on a 2-1 pitch to score Quintana. But Tars closer Josh Stewart shut the door to salvage the final game.
Bucs starter
Adrian Benitez suffered the loss after working 4 2/3 innings. Rollins' Mike Gaughan (2-1) picked up the win in two innings of relief.
Barry's four home runs Saturday bumped their season total to 53 this season, which ranks sixth in single-season history. Â
Barry travels to Boca Raton to take on SSC rival Lynn in a three-game series beginning 3 p.m. Friday.
