Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- In a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship match, Barry University's No. 1-ranked men's tennis team fell to No. 2 Hawaii Pacific, 5-0.
The Buccaneers (5-2) beat the Sea Warriors (6-0) last year to win the national title. Hawaii Pacific was too tough in this neutral site match Friday, however.
HPU swept the doubles matches, and wrapped it up with a pair of singles wins before the match was halted at five. Alexander Meyer and Thibaud Berland defeated
Ahmed Triki and
Nico Dreer at the top position, 8-5. Jamie Martinez-Vich and Filip Delezel defeated
Renato Lombardi and
Franco Echenique, 8-4, at No. 2. Torben Otto and Jakub Hadrava beat
Fabian Pronnet and
Daniel Ventura, 8-4, at No. 3.
Eighth-ranked Martinez-Vich defeated 12th-ranked and injured Lombardi, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. Last year Martinez-Vich was injured in the NCAA Championshp match that the Buccaneers prevailed in to complete their second perfect season. Otto was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Ventura at No. 5.
In a battle of Top-10 opponents, Lombardi and Berland's match was unfinished with the Bucs' top player a game away from winning.
The Bucs play at Point Loma Saturday.
