Baseball Falls to Flagler

Bucs, Saints meet Sunday for twin bill

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Barry University's baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game weekend series at Flagler Saturday night, 6-2.

The Buccaneers (16-9) will resume the series with the Saints (12-11) in a doubleheader beginning noon Sunday at Drysdale Field.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Barry cut Flagler's lead in half when Kyle Pangallo homered to left on a 1-0 count. It was Pangallo's second home run of the season.

The Bucs knotted the game up at 2-2 in the sixth, using three hits to draw even. Pangallo singled to center. Ryan Baldwin doubled down the right field line, moving Pangallo to third. Then with two outs, Mike Diaz had an infield single, allowing Pangallo to score. Baldwin tried to score on the play, but was cut down at the plate to end the inning.

Flagler broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh, and tacked on three more runs in the eighth to seal the game.

Pangallo went 2 for 4, scoring both of the Buccaneers' runs. Frank Gonzalez also had two hits in four plate appearances. Julian Abreu, Alexander DeGoti and Alffredi Ramos also had one of Barry's nine hits. Flagler's Dylan Jones was 2 for 3, Bryce Evans went 1 for 5 and drove in two runs, and Kolin McMillen had an RBI triple.

Flagler starter Michael Maiocco (4-1) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out 10 to pick up the win. Barry's Alex Lavandero (3-1) worked seven innings, allowing five runs, four hits and six walks, while fanning eight. Kyle Schackne earned his first save this season after allowing one hit, no runs and striking out three in the final 1 2/3 innings.

The Bucs stranded nine runners, and the Saints left eight on base.
