Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's tennis team beat Auburn Montgomery, 6-3, Sunday at Buccaneer Tennis Center in a matchup featuring the NCAA Division II's No. 1- and NAIA's No. 2-ranked teams.
The No. 1 Buccaneers (8-2) were playing on the second of three consecutive Sundays. Barry will play No. 30 New York Institute of Technology next Sunday at noon. Auburn Montgomery fell to 6-4 this season.Â
The Bucs won two of the three doubles matches, claiming points at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions. Barry's ninth-ranked pair of
Renato Lombardi and
Ahmed Triki pulled out a 9-8 (7-2) victory over Birkir Gunnarsson and Vincent Dubosclard at No. 1 pairs. Barry's
Daniel Ventura and
Franco Echenique defeated Santiago Veglia and Matias Destefanis, 8-6, at the No. 3 position.
The Warhawks picked up a point at No. 2 doubles when Francisco Mendieta and Luis Vivas beat
Nico Dreer and
Fabian Pronnet, 8-6. Auburn Montgomery added two more points at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, but the Buccaneers held serve in the other four matches to seal the deal.
Barry's
Victor Ravier defeated Veglia, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 6 singles for his first collegiate win in the dual season. Dreer, ranked No. 37 in Division II, was bumped up to No. 1 singles, and delivered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over the NAIA's 39th-ranked Mendieta. Pronnet beat 11th-ranked Dubosclard, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Ventura wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Destefanis at No. 4 singles.
