LAKELAND, Fla.—The Baarry Buccaneers and Florida Southern Moccasins split a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday, with Barry taking game one 9-3 and the Mocs rebounding with an 8-5 win in game two.
The Bucs (12-9, 6-3 SSC) rode a seven-run fourth inning to the 9-3 win in game one. After going up 1-0 on a squeeze bunt by Cheyanne Head that scored Kayla Ogle in the first inning, the Bucs watched the Mocs take a 3-1 lead in the second.
Trailing 3-1, however, the Bucs sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring seven runs. Megan Copeland's three-run double was the big blow, while Ogle, Sam Busekrus and Alayna Gallagher each had RBI singles.
Barry tacked an insurance run on in the seventh, as Ogle drive in Anieliese Palmiero.
Palmeiro (4-2) went the distance for the win for the Bucs. She allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks, while striking out four. Brandi Jones (5-6), the first of three pitchers for the Mocs, took the loss. She allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and struck out one.
In the second game, the Bucs jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning. Lynsey Duncan had a two-run triple in the third and an RBI single in the fourth.
But the Mocs (10-15-1, 3-4-1 SSC) scored four unearned runs off three Buccaneer pitchers in the sixth.
Hannah Loyer (2-4) earned the win in relief for the Mocs. She worked five innings, holding the Bucs to a run on four hits. Jessica Trana started for the Mocs, but lasted just two innings, allowing four runs on eight hits in two innings.
Geneva Santos (8-4) took the loss for Barry. She went 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks.
The Bucs host the Tampa Spartans in a crucial SSC series on Friday-Saturday, Mar. 18-19.
