CLEARWATER, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rode a five-run fourth inning to a 7-2 softball win over Palm Beach Atlantic in the season opener at the Eckerd Triton Invitational at Eddie C. Moore Park on Friday night.
The Bucs (1-0) batted around in the fourth inning, scoring five runs. Megan Copeland and Dee Espinosa had singles to lead off the inning. Cheyanne Head singled up the middle to score Copeland. Kristina Pazienza delivered a bunt double to score Espinosa. Head came home on a single by Ashley Fernandez. Kayla Ogle drove in Fernandez with a single up the middle. Alayna Gallagher knocked in Hunter Mars with a single through the right side.
After PBA (1-4) scored one on an Ali French double in the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs tacked on two runs in the seventh. Copeland walked and scored on a wild pitch. Head singled to left and scored on a base hit by Fernandez.
Geneva Santos (1-0) scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort to earn the win for the Bucs. She allowed two runs (one earned), walked four and struck out five. Jana Wagner (0-1) took the loss for the Sailfish. She allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.2 innings and struck out one.
The Bucs face #3 Shorter (1-1) and Chadron State (1-1) on Saturday.
