Women's Basketball Soars Over Eagles

Kerin had 13 points in the second half

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers built and early lead and coasted to a 77-71 win over the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Wednesday night in the ICI Center.

After swapping baskets in the early going, the Bucs (18-8) grabbed an 8-6 lead with 5:14 in the first period on a three-pointer by Irene Sanchez. They extended the lead out to 16-11 on a trey by Ines Kerin with 3:27 left before the Eagles (6-19) began to cut back into the lead, eventually tying it at 19-19 on a Tara Fields layup with 0:49 left. Amra Elezovic nailed a three-pointer near the buzzer to give Barry the 22-19 edge at the quarter break.

In the second period, the Eagles opened with a 9-1 run to take a 28-23 lead on a jumper by Merceds Jorge with 5:35 to halftime. But the Bucs turned it around, closing the frame on a 17-3 run to go into the intermission up 40-31. Kerin drained a three-pointer with 3:22 to play that put the Bucs up 30-28 and they never trailed again.

In the second half, Kerin and Elezonvic combined to score 23 points to keep the Bucs on top, despite 17 points from Jorge in the half.

The Bucs built a 55-44 lead with 1:39 in the third and the closest the Eagles got the rest of the way was five points, 69-64 with 1:33 to play on a three-pointer by Ashley McWilliams.

Elezovic led the Bucs with 26 points, while Kerin scored 19. Jackie Perez and Sanchez each had 11. Jorge led the Eagles with a career-high 29 points, while Sabrina Whiting added 14.

The Bucs close the regular season at home against the Eckerd Tritons on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:00 pm. The Bucs will recognize the nine-member senior class prior to the game.
