Torrid Shooting Lifts Men's Basketball by Embry-Riddle

Barrueta breaks school season scoring mark

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University shot a season-best 63.8 percent to beat Embry-Riddle, 112-84, Wednesday night. 

The Buccaneers hit 44 of 69 field goals, falling two buckets short of the school single-game record. Six players scored in double figures for the No. 23 Buccaneers, who will host No. 14/20 Eckerd at 4 p.m. Saturday for the Sunshine State Conference regular season title.

Barry (20-5) reached 20 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. Yunio Barrueta broke Anthel Hicks' 24-year single-season scoring record of 610 points. Barrueta had 20 points and seven rebounds, and now has 623 points this year. Barrueta broke the record in 25 games. Hicks set the mark in 29 games in 1991-92.

Anders Haas scored 19 points and had eight assists, and Undra Mitchem had 16 points, five assists and three steals.

The Bucs never trailed in the game, and outscored the Eagles, 48-28, in the paint. Barry's 44 field goals fell two shy of the school record. The Bucs had 34 assists, which was four shy of the school record.

Haas scored on a layup with 6:48 to go in the first half to give the Bucs a 43-20 lead. Adrian Gonzalez scored in the paint to extend Barry's lead to 25, but Embry-Riddle (15-10) outscored the Bucs 10-5 over the last 3:59 to get within 20 at the break. Barry hovered around 70 percent from the floor in most of the first half, settling for 67.7 percent at the intermission.

Gonzalez scored to extend the Bucs' lead to 30 at the 13:11 mark of the second half. Gonzalez hit a jumper with 4:07 to go to widen Barry's lead to 110-70. 

Gonzalez finished with 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting. Tray Leonard had 12 points and seven boards, and Elvar Fridriksson 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Embry-Riddle's Dalton Barnes scored 22 points, and Daniel Kiesling had 17.

The Bucs were 15 of 29 from 3-point range. Embry-Riddle shot 38 percent from the field, including 28.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
