MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women's basketball heads into the home stretch this week with the final two regular season games. The Bucs start the week on Wednesday, Feb. 24 in Daytona Beach, Fla., against the Eagles of Embry-Riddle.
It will be the first trip ever to the ICI Center for the Bucs, but hopefully, not the last. The semifinals and finals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament will be held at the ICI Center on Mar. 5-6.
The Bucs (17-8, 9-6 SSC) defeated the Eagles 79-65 earlier this year in the Health & Sports Center. Irene Sanchez led four Bucs in double figures with a season-high 18 points, while Ines Kerin and Amra Elezovic each had 14 and Juhnae Richardson added a career-high 12 points. The balanced effort offset the 34 combined points the Eagles (6-18) got from Sabrina Whiting and Mercedes Jorge.
Elezovic continues to lead the Buccaneers and remains a player of the year candidate for the conference. She is second in the conference scoring 16.8 points per game and leads the league shooting 90.1 percent from the free throw line.
The backcourt duo of Kerin and Jackie Perez make up the most prolific three-point shooting pair in the conference. Kerin leads the league at 47.4 percent and 2.6 made treys per game. Perez is fourth shooting 42.0 percent and also hits 2.6 buckets per game. Kerin, at 12.3 points per game, and Perez, at 10.9, are second and third on the team. Perez leads the team at 3.5 assists per game, while Kerin adds 3.0.
Sanchez does a bit of everything, scoring 9.8 points per game, grabbing 5.3 rebounds and dishing out 3.2 assists. Kim Flournoy leads the team in rebounding at 6.0 per game and steals at 1.7 per game. She is a candidate for defensive player of the year, having won the weekly award twice.
Whiting leads the Eagles at 14.7 points per game, while Jorge tacks on 9.6 points and grabs a team-best 8.3 rebounds.
