Women's Basketball Tripped up by Tampa

Bucs drop just third game at home

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University women's basketball team fell to Tampa, 69-60, Saturday.

It was just the third time this season the Buccaneers have stumbled at home. But Barry has a chance to right the ship next Saturday when it hosts Eckerd in the final regular season game.

Barry (17-8, 9-6 Sunshine State Conference) led 17-15 after the first quarter, but were outscored 22-16 in the second as the Spartans (14-12, 7-7) took control. The Bucs used a free throw by Amra Elezovic at the 1:42 mark of the third period to tie the game for the third time, but Tampa picked up a three by Juliana Cavallaro on the next trip down the floor, and the Spartans held the lead for good.

The Buccaneers were outscored 17-11 in the fourth quarter.

Elezovic had 18 points and seven rebounds. Irene Sanchez scored 15 points, and Jackie Perez had 11 points and eight assists. Cavallaro had 19 points, and Elena De Alfredo 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans.

Perez hit three triples to tie Florida Tech's Christine Keenan for sixth place on the SSC career three-point field goals list with 223. She needs four more to tie Nova Southeastern's Danielle Robinson for fifth place among SSC leaders.

Barry was outscored 17-5 in points off turnovers.

The Buccaneers shot 46.9 percent from the field, going 23 of 49. Tampa was 25 of 57 for 43.9 percent. Barry outrebounded Tampa, 33-26. The Bucs hit 6 of 12 shots in the second quarter and 6 of 11 in the third. Tampa was 9 of 18 from the floor in the second.

Barry plays at Embry-Riddle 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
