Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's men's tennis team got a scare Saturday, but the top-ranked Buccaneers pulled out a 5-4 win over No. 9 Valdosta State in front of 102 people at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
Three singles matches required tiebreakers, and a doubles match provided a little extra drama as well, but the Bucs survived their first test of the season against a quality Blazers team.
Ahmed Triki,
Renato Lombardi and
Fabian Pronnet all won both of their matches to help the Bucs pull it out.
Triki defeated Leo Blay, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 1 singles in a matchup of two Top-10 opponents. Triki and Lombardi were 8-5 winners over Niklas Herbring and Gereon Heitmann at No. 1 doubles. Lombardi beat Herbring, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, at No. 5 singles in what turned out to be a crucial point for the Buccaneers.
Pronnet and
Daniel Ventura defeated Fernando Rivas and Jordi Mas, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. Pronnet beat Rivas, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.
Barry's
Franco Echenique and
Lucas Kogachi fell to Blay and Xavier Pineda, 9-7, in a competitive No. 2 doubles match.
The Bucs will host Florida Tech 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Sunshine State Conference opener.
