WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team lost a tough one at Rollins Wednesday night, 92-87.
The No. 15 Buccaneers (18-5, 10-4 Sunshine State Conference) now sit tied with the Tars (18-7, 10-4) for second place in the league standings, a half-game behind No. 22 Eckerd, which was idle Wednesday.
Barry will host Tampa at 4 p.m. Saturday.
With the game tied in the final two minutes, the Buccaneers could not convert on the offensive end, save a tough triple by
Yunio Barrueta with a hand in his face in front of the Bucs bench that kept Barry within two with 18 seconds to play.Â
The Bucs led 41-39 at halftime after knocking down 17 of 39 field goals. The Tars hit 15 of 32 from the floor, but were 3 of 10 from beyond the three-point line. Barry's largest lead in the first half was six at the 2:03 mark.Â
Barrueta scored on a layup less than three minutes into the second half to push Barry out to a 48-43 lead. Rollins tied the game on a Sharif Almulla triple.
Arie Williams canned one of his five 3-pointers, and
Marko Tomic sank two free throws to keep the Bucs in front by three.
Adrian Gonzalez hit a jumper at the 13:34 mark to give the Buccaneers a two-possession lead.Â
Rollins went on a 6-0 run to take the lead before Barry's
Elvar Fridriksson answered with a triple to put the Bucs back in front. Alex Blessig hit a triple to give the Tars a five-point lead with 9:34 to go, but a three by Barrueta and basket by Gonzalez tied the game again. Rollins inched its lead back to four with 3:21 remaining, but
Undra Mitchem scored on a well-executed play off a dish from
Tray Leonard to bring the Bucs within 84-83. Leonard hit a free throw to tie the game at the 2:09 mark.
But Barry went one of six from the floor down the stretch, having to put up desperation shots as the Tars sank three of their final four free throws.
Barrueta finished with 19 points, going 5 of 11 from 3-point range, and had six rebounds and a block. Leonard had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Williams had 15 points and seven assists. Fridriksson had 12 points, seven assists and two steals. Gonzalez scored 10 points.Â
Sam Philpott had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Deion Clark 18 points on 7 of 7 shooting for the Tars.
The Bucs were outrebounded 40-37. Barry shot 44 percent, while Rollins hit 51.6 percent of its field goals.
Barry had 31 assists, marking the fourth time it has had 30 or more this season. The Buccaneers were 16 of 36 from 3-point land, but attempted only seven free throws, sinking five. Rollins was 7 of 20 from long distance, but made 19 of 25 from the stripe.
