MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers concluded their 2016 season as they fell to the West Florida Argonauts 1-0 Friday night during the South Regional Final at Buccaneer Field.
The first half ended scoreless, with West Florida outshooting Barry 5-2. The Argonauts (19-4-0) had five corners, while the Bucs (11-4-2) only took one. Both sides kept equal possession of the ball, but neither could capitalize when given the chance to put one on net. West Florida had a chance to take the lead in the final minutes of the half with a flurry of chances from inside the Bucs 18-yard box. However, with the help of a block from Jade Adams with 0:36 seconds left in the game, the Bucs were able to keep the Argonauts off the scoreboard.
The Argonauts scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute with a goal off of a corner kick. Kalijit Atwal lined up the kick for West Florida and, as she sent it in, Georgia Bailey headed the ball just over the head of Bucs defender Shannell McDonnell.
Neither side allowed any more goals from ending up in the net for the remainder of the second half.  The Argonauts held a 13-7 edge in shots over the Bucs. Katelyn Burkhart kept the clean sheet after making two saves for the Argonauts. Paula Forero took the loss for the Bucs after making three saves. Adams and Katie Turner also swept balls off the line.
This was the first time the Bucs conceded a goal against the Argonauts in the postseason, over five games. The Bucs have shut out West Florida the last four times the two have met in postseason, including 1-0 last season.
West Florida moves on to play in the NCAA quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 20 on Buccaneer Field. They will play the winner of the Southeast Regional Final between North Georgia and Columbus State.
