Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Barry's volleyball team gave No. 12 Palm Beach Atlantic all it could handle before falling, 25-21, 21-25, 27-25, 25-16, Tuesday night.
The Buccaneers (11-9) will play at Florida Tech 7 p.m. Thursday. PBA (19-3) won its 19th consecutive match.
Barry controlled most of the opening set, getting out to a 20-18 lead when
Genesis Castillo pounded a kill. Katie Ballantyne fired an ace to complete a 3-0 Sailfish run that put PBA up 21-20 before
Kristina Filimonova tied it for the Bucs. But the Sailfish ran off four straight points to take the first set, which featured six ties and three lead changes.
The Bucs hit .306 in the first set, blasting 15 kills against four errors. The Sailfish hit .135 with 10 kills and five errors.
Barry bounced back in the second set, racing out to a 9-3 lead. PBA cut it to 14-10, but
Jaeda Allen's kill increased the Bucs lead to 17-12. A kill by Molly Burkhardt pulled the Sailfish within 18-15, but the Buccaneers didn't cave, using a kill by
Ivana Didanovic to make it 21-17. Didanovic and Castillo put away back-to-back balls to move the Bucs within set point. Three serves later, Castillo's kill tied the match at a set apiece.
The Bucs hit .263 in the second set with 15 kills and five errors. The Fish hit .125 with 14 kills and eight errors. Barry outblocked PBA, 7-3, through the first two sets.
Barry trailed 15-9 in the third set, but an ace by
Juliana Tirabassi and kill by
Eva Raat pulled the Bucs within 15-12 to prompt a Sailfish timeout. A kill by
Brittany Reynolds, a Sailfish attack error and kill by Raat tied it up at 17-17. After the Fish grabbed control again, Reynolds pounded a kill to tie it back up, 19-19. Reynolds slammed down an overpass kill to keep it tied before PBA won the next two points. Castillo's kill cut it to one, and a tap by Allen tied it up, 22-22. PBA took a 24-22 lead, but two straight kills by Castillo -- the latter on a poor defensive play by the Sailfish -- tied it at 24-24. A sideout later,
Ariel Mangum's kill tied it at 25-25, but the Sailfish won the final two points to move within a set of the match.
The Buccaneers hit .295 with 19 kills and six errors in the third set. The Sailfish hit .304 with 17 kills and three errors. The third set featured six ties.
PBA took a 15-9 lead in the fourth set before Allen's kill stopped the Sailfish surge. But the Sailfish used a 6-0 run to take a 19-10 lead, following a Bucs attack error down the line that was originally ruled in by the line judge. The call reversal was a big momentum changer as the Sailfish won 10 of the last 16 points.
Barry outhit PBA .240 to .200.Â
Castillo and Raat each had 12 kills. Allen and Reynolds had nine apiece. Didanovic had seven kills and four blocks. Filimonova had six kills and four blocks. Tirabassi and
Jenny Trinidad each had 24 assists.
