MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's men's soccer team speared the Sailfish 2-0 Saturday on senior night.
Both teams battled hard in the first half, but neither side found the back of the net. The first half ended scoreless, but Palm Beach Atlantic (10-3-1, 5-1-1 SSC) held a 9-4 edge in shots over the Bucs.
The Bucs (8-4-0, 2-4-0 SSC) launched a spear into the Sailfish in the 57th minute, as Hanno Antoni drew a foul in PBA's 18 yard box, and Barry was given a penalty kick. Frank Lustig lined up to take the penalty kick for the Bucs. Lustig tip-toed his way up to the ball, fooled the keeper to dive to the right side of the net, and Lustig drove the ball to the left side to take the 1-0 lead for the Bucs.
In the 72nd minute, the Bucs sent the Sailfish packing as they increased the score to a two-goal lead. Jerrell Cato finessed his way into the opponent's 18 yard box, and lofted a pass across the six yard line that found the feet of Thomas Coombes, who drove the ball into the net on his first touch. The goal marked Coombes's 31st goal of his career, and he is now tied for 6th all-time with Willie Villalobos (1995-98) for most goals in a Barry men's soccer player's career.
The Sailfish recorded their first conference loss of the season thus far, despite holding a 14-12 edge in shots over the Bucs. Elliot Barker took the loss for PBA, after he made only two saves. Michael Scheraldi made five saves as he recorded his second career shutout for the Bucs.
The Bucs host Florida Tech Tuesday Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. to continue conference play.
