Men's Soccer Drops Match Against Visiting Sharks

Doyle and Antoni score, but it wasn't enough

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry's men's soccer team fell Wednesday night in a tough 3-2 loss to the visiting Sharks of Nova.

Nova mid-fielder, Filippo Mancini, gave the Sharks the lead in the match in the 36th minute. Mancini received a throw-in from teammate, Emilio Blanco, brought the ball down and popped it over Barry keeper, Michael Scheraldi.

Barry mid-fielder, Alex Doyle, knotted the match in the 53rd minute when he scored off a header from the ball that was crossed into the box from Leo Awokang. The goal was Doyle's third of the season.

The Sharks (3-9-0, 1-6-0 SSC) however, regained the lead in the 57th minute when Noel Johnson won the footrace between Scheraldi and himself to a long ball that was sent over the Barry defense. Johnson then touched ball past Scheraldi and basically walked the ball into the open net, to take the 2-1 lead.

Nova freshman, Juanes Devia, scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Bestun Mohammed carried the ball along the top of the box and fed Devia the ball, who cut it back to beat the Barry defender and ripped a shot that increased the lead to 3-1.

Barry (7-4-0, 1-4-0 SSC) trimmed the lead with a goal from Hanno Antoni in the 79th minute. Antoni received the ball from Thomas Coombes, who gathered the rebound off of the missed shot from Manuel Perez that hit the post, and Antoni drilled the ball into the net.

Even after holding a 14-7 edge in shots over the Sharks, the Bucs took another conference defeat. Scheraldi took the loss for the Bucs, after making only three saves. The Sharks keeper, Daniel Ordaz, made four saves to record his first win of the season.

The Bucs hope to improve their conference record with a win this Saturday, as they take on Palm Beach Atlantic at home at 6 p.m. This match will also be senior night for the Bucs.
