Volleyball Drops Match at Nova

Bucs host Rollins Friday night

DAVIE, Fla. – After winning the first set, Barry's volleyball team fell to Nova Southeastern Tuesday, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21.

The Buccaneers (9-8, 2-4 Sunshine State Conference) will host Rollins 7 p.m. Friday.

Kristina Filimonova had 12 kills, three blocks, an ace, and hit .500. Jaeda Allen had nine kills, 12 digs and an ace. Jenny Trinidad had 23 assists and an ace to move her within one of 100 for her career, and Kat Espinosa came up with 23 of Barry's 69 digs.

The Bucs outdug the Sharks (11-8, 3-3) by 17. Nova had been leading the league in digs per set, but the Bucs were better on the defensive end in this match. It was Barry's offense that was the difference. The Bucs hit .110, committing 27 attack errors in 127 swings. Nova hit .199 with 22 errors in 161 attacks.

Nova gave away six points in the first set on service errors, including back-to-back scoring chances when the Sharks had closed within two. The Bucs hit .280 in the first set with 11 kills and four errors. Barry outdug the Sharks in the opening set, 17-10. Allen had seven of them. Genesis Castillo and Ivana Didanovic each had three kills in the opening set.

Didanovic finished with seven kills and three blocks.

The Bucs led 14-11 after a kill by Didanovic in the second set, but the Sharks went on a 7-1 run, touched off by two straight kills between a timeout by former Buccaneer Tashalyn Begon to put NSU up 18-15. Begon finished with 10 kills.

The Sharks upped the lead to 21-17 before the Bucs got two back. But Barry gave away another point on a service error, and Katie Pyles added a kill to move the Sharks within two points of tying the match at a set apiece. And that's exactly where it stood at the intermission with both teams winning a set.

In the pivotal point in the match, both teams went point for point midway through the third set, but after a kill by Filimonova tied the score at 17-17, the Sharks went on an 8-2 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Barry hit .071 in the third, managing eight kills with six errors. Nova hit .282 with 17 kills and six errors.

Nova ran out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set after the Bucs committed six errors while managing just three kills to open the set. Barry battled back to within 13-10 on an ace by Ariel Mangum and block by Kishara Gordon and Castillo. The Bucs cut it to within one on a kill by Filimonova and a Sharks attack error. Barry's Brittany Reynolds tied it at 17-17 with a crosscourt kill. But Nova used a 5-1  spurt to creep ahead 22-18. Barry responded again on a block by Didanovic and Castillo and a kill by Didanovic during Mangum's serve to pull the Bucs within one. The Bucs gave one back on a service error one point later coming out of a timeout, and the Sharks ran away with it down the stretch.

Nova gave away 15 points on the serve, while the Buccaneers committed eight service errors. Both teams had five aces.
