TAMPA, Fla. – Barry's men's soccer team wrapped up their weekend in Tampa after they dismantled the Warhawks 7-1 Sunday afternoon.
An early goal from forward, Ivan Arenas, just two minutes into the match, started Barry's scoring spree. Arenas was found on the right side of the six yard box with a diagonal pass on the ground from senior, Thomas Coombes. Arenas then took a touch and drilled the ball into the net to take the 1-0 lead.
In the 41st minute, Leo Awokang set up Hanno Antoni to score his ninth goal of the season. Awokang maneuvered his way into the 18 yard box past defenders, where he then slotted the ball across the grid to find Antoni, who finished the ball into the back of the net.
Coombes had himself a day as he scored a brace, with one goal scored in the final minutes of the first half, and his second being scored less than 10 minutes into the second half. Frank Lustig assisted Coombes on his first goal, when he fed the senior forward the ball just outside the 18 yard box, where Coombes on his first touch, roped the ball into the right upper 90 of the net. Pablo Georgakopoulos assisted Coombes on his second goal, setting him up with a one-on-one with the keeper. Coombes, using his speedy footwork, touched the ball past Auburn-Montgomery keeper, Jacob Bergengren, and passed the ball into the open net to take the 4-0 lead.
AUM didn't go unanswered, as a miscommunication in Barry's defense allowed the Warhawks to net one in the 54th minute from Alan Harwell.
The Bucs added three more goals to their lead before the end of the second half. Alex Doyle netted his second goal of the season when Francisco Aguirre received the ball from Lustig towards the middle of the field and carried the ball down most of the left flank of the pitch, to where he laid the ball off to Doyle just outside the six yard line, who was able to knock it by the keeper.
In a span of 2:14, Doyle helped out teammates, Maurice Padula and Arenas, as they scored the last two goals of the match for the Bucs. Doyle set up Padula with a pass to beat the outside defender and make his way into the 18 yard box, where he slotted the ball past the AUM keeper. Moments later, Doyle led Arenas with a ball that created a footrace between Arenas and the AUM keeper, in which Arenas won. Arenas then touched the ball down the left side of the field, and ripped a shot into the net, which was outside the reach of the defenders who tried racing back to stop it.
The Bucs led the Warhawks 19-8 in shots throughout the match. Alvaro Magel picked up his first victory of the season for the Buccaneers, as he made four saves. Bergengren took the loss for AUM, despite making six saves.
