MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers made it three straight overtime wins in a row over the Tampa Spartans in a sloppy 2-1 Sunshine State Conference women's soccer win at Buccaneer Field on Saturday night.
The Bucs (6-2-1, 3-2-0 SSC) got off to a great start after having not played in two weeks, getting on the board just 65 seconds into the game. Molly Sharpe took a feed from Rayah Seckler in the 18-yard box and ripped a shot that was stopped by Spartan defender Miranda Gonzalez. But the Spartan's clearance came right back to Sharpe who beat keeper Caroline Frykgard to the right post.
The score stood up until the 31st minute when Tampa's Haley Pigott scored a nearly identical goal. Her initial shot was stopped by the Bucs' defense, but Pigott got the rebound and chipped a shot over the defender in the goal mouth to knot the game at 1-1.
Less than seven minutes into the second period, lightning drove the teams from the field, causing a 56:00 minute delay. Neither team could crack the scoreboard in the second half as the heavy rains made most connections difficult.
In the first overtime period, Sharpe saved a ball from going out on the left sideline and lofted a cross into the box. Carissa Sanchez was able to collect it and slot the ball home at the far post.
The Bucs out-shot the Spartans (5-7-1, 3-1-1 SSC) 15-5, but only put five shots on goal. Both Frykgard and Barry's Paula Forero had three saves.
The Bucs defeated the Spartans 2-1 in double overtime to win the SSC Tournament, then 1-0 in double overtime to win the NCAA South Region title last season.
The Bucs travel across town on Wednesday, Oct. 19 to face the conference
