Women's Soccer Hosts Tampa Spartans For Senior Day

The seven members of the 2016 class will be recognized for their accomplishments

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers are hosting the Tampa Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6:00 pm. The game, which was originally to be the last regular season home game, is designated Senior Night for the seven members of the 2016 class of Barry University women's soccer.

Tamara Castillo is a two-year letterwinner after transferring from Montgomery College, our first senior was part of the Bucs Sunshine State Conference regular season championship, SSC Tournament championship and NCAA South Region Championship. A criminology major, she is set to graduate in the spring.

Breia Pierce is a one-year letterwinner for the Bucs this year after transferring from South Carolina State. A member of the defensive third, she has helped lead a unit that has posted a 1.07 goals against average and 3 shutouts in 8 games. A graduate student, she is pursuing her master's in counseling.

Linnea Kogsta is another two-year letterwinner who transferred in from Arkansas-Little Rock. She has played both on defense and in the midfield in her 21 career games with 16 starts. She has scored twice and added three assists. A member of both the Athletic Director's Honor List and the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, she will be graduating with a degree in applied sports and exercise science.

Rayah Seckler is a three-time letterwinner after transferring from Long Island University in New York. In 39 games, making 32 starts, she has scored eight goals, including three game-winners, and added nine assists. She was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Tournament team last year as a junior. She will be graduating with her degree in sports psychology.

Shannell McDonnell is another two-time letterwinner coming from Feather River College. She also saw time in the midfield before settling in at right back, where she has played 18 of her 26 games. In the 18 games on defense, the Bucs went 13-3-2 with eight shutouts and championships at the SSC and South Region Tournaments. She is pursuing her degree in sports management.

Paula Forero has been a stalwart between the pipes in her three seasons with the Bucs after transferring from the University of Miami. She ranks tied for 6th in total wins for a keeper and fourth in winning percentage. Her 13 shutouts are also tied for 6th. She was First-team All-Sunshine State Conference and All-South Region last year as the Bucs won the Sunshine State Conference regular season championship, SSC Tournament championship and NCAA South Region Championship. She is graduating with a degree in international business.

Katie Turner is the lone four-year letterwinner on the team, and the most highly decorated. A starter since midway through her freshman year, she has led the Bucs to a 43-11-8 mark with 29 shutouts. The Bucs have won three straight Sunshine State Conference regular season championships, one SSC Tournament title and one South Region Championship. She is a two-time All-SSC first-team pick and the 2014 SSC co-Defensive Player of the Year, when she played every minute of the season. A member of both the Dean's List and the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll, she is graduating with a degree in biology.

The Bucs (5-2-1, 2-2-0 SSC) are coming off a lengthy hiatus due to Hurricane Matthew. They won their last time out, 5-2 in a neutral site game against West Alabama.

Barry is currently tied for fifth in the SSC, while Tampa is fourth after a remarkable turnaround. The Spartans lost six of their first seven games, but are 4-0-1 since then.

The Bucs are led by sophomores Carissa Sanchez and Molly Sharpe. Sharpe has three goals and three assists, while Sanchez has two goals and five assists, which leads the conference in assists/game.

Keeper Paula Forero is fifth in the league with a 1.08 goals against average, but is second with three shutouts in eight matches.

Nastasia Asgedom leads the Spartans (5-6-1, 3-0-1 SSC) with three goals and three assists. Keeper Caroline Frykgard, who missed the first six games of the season, has a 0.78 goals against average and one shutout in six games.
