No. 21 Men's Basketball Pounds Florida Tech

Bucs off until next Wednesday

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Barry University men's basketball team bounced back in a big way.

The No. 21 Buccaneers answered their biggest loss of the season with a resounding 20-point victory at Florida Tech Wednesday, winning 85-65. Barry (13-3, 6-2 Sunshine State Conference) remained in second place in the league standings. Florida Tech fell to 10-8, 3-5.

Yunio Barrueta and Tray Leonard both had double-doubles for the second time this season. Barrueta had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Leonard finished with 18 points and 10 boards.

Florida Tech cut Barry's lead to one 45 seconds into the second half, but Barrueta drove in and scored, Undra Mitchem hit a three and Anders Haas hit a jumper to key a 7-0 Bucs spurt. Leonard scored on a wrap-around pass from Arie Williams to push Barry's lead to 12 with 14:35 to play.

Elvar Fridriksson took advantage of a Panthers turnover, going end to end to score, and Adrian Gonzalez tipped in an offensive rebound before scoring on a low-post lay-in to build an 18-point Bucs lead.

Gonzalez had 16 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Mitchem scored 15.

The Bucs outrebounded the Panthers, 46-31.

Barry led by as many as 15 in the first half when Mitchem buried a 3-pointer at the 6:23 mark, but Florida Tech went on a 10-0 run to cut the gap to 33-28 with 4:37 remaining. The Bucs extended their lead back to nine on two more occasions, but the Panthers got it down to four on a Randy Echols free throw. After Fridrikson hit a three, Florida Tech's Sam Daniel scored with 12 seconds on the clock to trim the gap to five entering the break.

Both teams shot 48 percent in the first half.

Barry outscored Florida Tech, 44-28, in the paint. The Bucs outscored the Panthers, 16-2, in second chance points. Barry converted 17 Tech turnovers into 21 points. The Bucs had 15 turnovers that translated into nine points.

The Buccaneers will host Florida Southern next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
