MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team put together one of its biggest wins of the season, hammering Florida Southern, 101-63, Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers (14-3, 7-2 Sunshine State Conference) moved within a game of the league lead after first place Eckerd fell at Saint Leo, 87-84. It was Eckerd's first league loss.
Barry never trailed in its biggest conference win of the season. Florida Southern (8-12, 4-6) dropped its fifth game in the past six. The Mocs were without leading scorer Dylan Travis.
Barry outrebounded Florida Southern, 60-32. The Bucs' 60 rebounds broke a school record.The Moccasins got within one with 3:56 left in the first half, but
Elvar Fridriksson and
Yunio Barrueta hit back-to-back-to-back threes, Barrueta canning the last two, to push Barry's lead to 10.
Adrian Gonzalez's bucket sent the Bucs into the break up 12.
Barry hit 19 of 40 field goals in the first half. Florida Southern was 14 of 39.
The Mocs got within nine on Joey Morlan's 3-pointer at the 14:00 mark of the second half, but
Marko Tomic sank two free throws with 11:11 remaining to give the Buccaneers a 17-point lead. Barry pushed the lead to 28 on
Tray Leonard's layup. Tomic buried a 3 with 3:23 left to extend the lead to 40, and the Bucs ran away with it.
Leonard finished with his fifth double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. He also had two blocks and a steal. Barrueta scored 22 points and pulled down nine boards on a night he went 8 of 13 from the floor. Dominique Williams had 15 points, and Sheldon Zablotny 13 points and eight rebounds for the Mocs.
Fridriksson had 16 points and 12 assists in his third double-double of the season.
Undra Mitchem and Gonzalez both scored 12, and
Arie Williams had 10.
Barry was 41 of 85 from the floor. The 85 field goal attempts was the third most in school history. The Bucs were 11 of 29 from long distance. Florida Southern was 25 of 74 from the floor, and 8 of 29 from 3-point range. Barry outscored Florida Southern, 46-16, in the paint. The Bucs also blistered the Mocs, 22-2, in transition points. Barry's bench outscored Florida Southern, 32-12.Â
The Bucs will play at Lynn 4 p.m. Saturday.
