MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women's basketball team faces another tough test on Wednesday, Jan. 13 as they host the Sunshine State Conference-leading Nova Southeastern Sharks at 5:30 pm in the Health & Sports Center.
The Sharks (13-1, 5-0 SSC) have won eight in a row after being tripped up by Washburn on Nov. 27. The Bucs (10-4, 3-2 SSC) have won five of their last six. After winning the last six games against the Bucs, the Sharks hold a 21-16 edge in the series.
Offensively, both teams have been among the best in the league. NSU leads the conference averaging 77.4 points per game, while Barry is third at 70.3. Defensively, Barry is fourth, allowing just 60.9 points per game, while Nova Southeastern surrenders 64.6.
The senior trio of Amra Elezovic, Jackie Perez and Ines Kerin, continue to lead the Bucs. Elezovic is tops on the squad with 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game and shoots 90.0 percent from the line. She is fifth in the league in scoring and rebounding and second in the SSC in free throw percentage.
Guards Kerin and Perez chip in 12.8 and 11.0 points per game respectively. They rank first and second in three-point percentage at 47.5 and 42.9 percent. Kerin (2.8) is first and Perez (2.6) is tied for second in made three-pointers per game. Perez also leads the team with 3.6 assists per game.
Fellow senior Irene Sanchez is second on the team in rebounding (5.2) and assists (2.9) while averaging 9.6 points per game, after scoring a career-high 18 points in the win over Embry-Riddle on Saturday. Kim Flournoy, another senior, chips in 4.5 points and 5.2 rebounds to go along with her team-high 2.1 steals per game. Flournoy is third in the SSC in steals.
The two-pronged attack forward Kayla Wright and guard Taylor Buie, both juniors, lead the Sharks. Wright leads the way with 14.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Buie chips in 14.5 points per game. Senior guard Monaye Merritt adds 9.9 points and team and conference-best 5.6 assists per game.
