MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The top-ranked Barry Buccaneers pitched a 2-0 shutout past the Florida Tech Panthers at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday night as they opened defense of their Sunshine State Conference title with a win.
The game, which was delayed at the start by lightning, had very little excitement for the first 45 minutes. Shannell McDonnell hit the post for the Bucs (5-0-0, 1-0-0 SSC) in the 29th minute on a long shot and Barry held a 6-3 edge in shots.
The second half was a different matter. The Bucs broke the ice just 1:16 into the period. McDonnell ripped a shot from just outside the box that Panther keeper Julie Kantor saved, but the rebound dropped at the feet of Amanda Traynor and the sophomore found the back of the empty net for the game-winner. The goal by Traynor snapped a 661 minute scoreless streak in the series for the Buccaneers, dating back to Kayla Hodge's fifth minute goal in 2012.
In the 63rd minute, the Panthers (3-2-0, 0-1-0 SSC) had their best chance on a shot by Kiera McCarthy that Paula Forero barely pushed wide and hit off the post.
The Bucs put in the clincher in the 84th minute. The Panthers tried a square ball without enough pace and Shanice Robe ran on for a one-on-one chance with Kantor and found the back of the net.
Forero picked up her fifth straight win and fourth shutout, making two saves on the night. Kantor took the loss, making five saves, but surrendering two goals.
The Bucs travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday, Sept. 19 to face the Eagles of Embry-Riddle. The Eagles ended last season, their final one in NAIA, ranked third in the nation. This season, the Eagles are 3-2 after dropping their last two games 2-1 to Stetson and Rollins.
