MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.—The tenth-ranked Barry Buccaneers carded a 3-1 win over the Armstrong Pirates at the 2015 Bobcat Shootout on Friday.
The Bucs (3-0-0) jumped on top 2-0 before conceding their first goal of the season, then responded with an answer for the final margin.
Lavinia Nkomo continued her stellar play for the Bucs. She broke the ice in the 24th minute with an assist from Shanice Robe. Robe flicked the ball up the right sideline and Nkomo carried deep toward the endline. She lofted a shot from the baseline over the head of 5-3 Pirate keeper Olivia Luckie, off the post and into the side netting.
Despite holding a 9-4 edge in shots in the period, the Pirates (1-2-0) could not break through against the Buccaneer defense.
In the second half, Nkomo struck again. Amanda Traynor's shot high against Luckie was blocked back down to the feet of Nkomo who finished from six yards out.
The Pirates finally broke through in the 64th minute. The Bucs were whistled for a foul about 35 yards out. McKenzie Anderson's free kick found Erin Berube in the box. Berube slipped a pass over to Kennedi Herrmann all alone about eight yards out and she buried it past Buccaneer keeper Paula Forero. It was the first goal surrendered by the Bucs this season.
The Pirates continued to push forward for the equalizer, but in the 83rd minute, Traynor restored the two-goal lead. Christy Grimshaw found Traynor at the top of the 18 and Traynor faked inside, cut outside and beat Luckie one-on-one.
Forero had five saves to pick up the win for the Bucs. Luckie made six saves, but conceded three, to take the loss.
The Bucs face the host Georgia College Bobcats on Sunday in the tournament's final game.
