Michael L. Covone was honored as an Under Armour NCAA Division II Athletics Director of the Year Wednesday.
Covone was one of four NCAA Division II athletic directors honored during the James J. Four athletic directors from NCAA Division I FBS, FCS, I-AAA, Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior/Community College divisions were chosen as this year's recipients of the award.

Covone has served Barry athletics since its inception in 1984, beginning as the school's women's soccer coach. He coached the Buccaneers to a 140-32-9 record in 11 seasons, winning three NCAA Championships. His 1989 team became the first national champion in school history. Covone's teams also repeated as national champs in 1992 and 1993. He led the Bucs to the NCAA Tournament seven times, and his teams produced 11 straight winning seasons.
From 1988-96, Covone served as the university's associate director of athletics, and was elevated to the executive associate director of athletics from 1996-98. In 1998, he became the school's third director of athletics -- the position he currently occupies.
During Covone's tenure with Barry, the Buccaneers have captured 15 national championships, 62 Sunshine State Conference titles and have made 153 national tournament appearances. In each of the last three years, Barry has won two NCAA Championships under Covone's leadership.Â
