Fabian Groetsch is playing some good tennis these days. So is Barry University men's tennis team.
Groetsch won both of his matches, and his team followed suit in a 7-2 victory over NAIA No. 3 Auburn-Montgomery Wednesday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
Groetsch, ranked fourth in NCAA Division II, beat eighth-ranked Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. He and partner
Ahmed Triki, ranked eighth in the country in doubles, beat 15th-ranked Othmane Lalami and Birkir Gunnarsson, 8-1, at No. 1 pairs.
Third-ranked Triki defeated seventh-ranked Vincent Dubosclard, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
"These guys are playing some good tennis," Barry coach George Samuel said of his top two players.
The Bucs (14-0) swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead.
Renato Lombardi and
Fabian Pronnet defeated Luis Vivas and Francisco Mendieta, 8-1, at the No. 2 flight. At No. 3,
Franco Echenique and
Dominik Haider beat Pinones-Haltenhoff and Miguel Grifol, 8-5.
Vivas outlasted Pronnet in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7, at No. 3 singles. Haider defeated Gunnarsson, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4. Mendieta won a battle with Lombardi, 7-5, 2-6, 14-12, at the No. 5 spot. Barry's
