ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened Sunshine State Conference softball play with a sweep of the Saint Leo Lions. After Saturday's game was postponed, the Bucs took the make-up game 5-1 on Monday at University Field.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a lead in the first inning.
Megan Copeland singled to left and
Alayna Gallagher followed with an infield single.
Dee Espinosa drove both home with a liner over the head of Tiffany Thompson's head in left field. Espinosa came in on a fly ball from
Kelly Martinez.
The Lions got one run back in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by Adriana Sanders.
After giving up the homer to Sanders, Barry starter
Taylor Sabol settled down and set down the next 10 batters in order until running into trouble in the fourth. With two outs, Angela Kafalas singled down the right field line and Thompson followed with an infield single. After Torie Weindorf walked,
Haley Wiseman came in to face Cassie Boggs with the bases loaded and got her looking to end the threat.
The Bucs tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the fifth. After a two-out walk to Espinosa,
Julie Brito reached on a throwing error by shortstop Brittany Creamer.
Kelly Martinez cashed both runners in with a double to right center.
Wiseman (8-2) worked the last 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out six. She gave up one hit and one walk. Sabol went 3.2 innings to start the game, allowing a run on three hits and a walk.
Samantha Tyler (4-1) took the loss for the Lions. She allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks. She struck out three.
The Bucs return to Miami Shores to host the Florida Southern Moccasins in a three-game set on Friday-Sautrday, Mar. 6-7. The games will be carried live on video on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network.
