No. 3 Men's Tennis Shuts Out No. 7 Lander

Bucs go 2-0 on Georgia trip

Box ScoreĀ

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Barry University men's tennis team didn't get everything it wanted out of the weekend trip to Georgia, but two out of three ain't bad.

The No. 3-ranked Buccaneers beat No. 7 Lander, 5-0, Sunday at Valdosta State University in the final match of the three-day weekend. Saturday's match versus No. 1 West Florida was postponed due to rain. No make-up date has been set yet.

Barry (6-0) beat a third opponent via shutout this season, including two over the weekend. Four of the singles matches were left unfinished after play was halted once the Bucs secured their clinching fifth point. Poor weather pushed Sunday's originally-scheduled 9 a.m. match back past noon. But coach George Samuel, who has been encouraged with his team's drive and determination so far this season, made sure his team got the match in when the Bucs wrapped up two of the six singles flights.

For the second straight day, Barry's No. 2 doubles team of Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi pulled out a win over a regionally-ranked pair, beating the likes of Marc Hofer and Thibaut Leoussof, 8-6. The Bearcats duo is ranked 10th in the region.Ā

Ahmed Triki and Fabian Groetsch paired for a comfortable 8-1 win over Adam Johnsson and Loic Minery at No. 1. Dominik Haider and Franco Echenique were 8-3 winners over Benjamin Salle and Samuel Poutignat at the No. 3 flight. Groetsch and Triki improved to 5-0 as a tandem, while Echenique and Haider moved to 5-1 together.Ā

Groetsch, the No. 3-ranked player in the country, defeated 21st-ranked Salle, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. It was Groetsch's first match against an NCAA Division II nationally-ranked opponent this season. Fabian Pronnett was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Diego Zegarra at No. 6.Ā

Barry will host No. 8 Saint Leo at noon Saturday before turning its attention to NAIA No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett, which beat Lander 7-2 earlier this season.
