TAMPA, Fla. – Barry University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 16-point half deficit, losing 70-50 to the Tampa Spartans Saturday in the Martinez Center in the final regular season game.
Jackie Perez tied Christina Thompson's school single-season record for three-point field goals, going 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Perez's 67 triples this year bumped her career total to 149, which put her in a tie for second with current Bucs' assistant coach Shanna Suttington. Thompson also owns the career record at 161.
Perez had nine points, five rebounds and three steals. Amra Elezovic had 12 points, all in the second half on 5-of-10 shooting. Tampa's Juliana Cavallaro had 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Ellen Nurmi added 12 points for the Spartans.
Barry was 18-of-62 from the floor for 29 percent, whileTampa was 24-of-55 from the field.
Both teams attempted 29 field goals and 13 three-pointers in the first half with the Buccaneers hitting eight baskets, four of which were threes. Tampa was 14 of 29 from the floor, and seven of 13 from long range. The Spartans held a 19-18 edge in rebounding.
Nyjah Porcher scored all eight of her points and had seven rebounds in the first half. She finished with 10 rebounds.
The Bucs finish in seventh place in the SSC and will face second-seeded Rollins in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament on Thursday, Mar. 5 at 5:00 pm at the Silver Spurs Arena. Check with the conference website at www.sunshine stateconference.com for more details.
