Men's Basketball Tops Conquistadors, 108-84

Barrueta scores 30, Fridriksson notches double-double

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry feasted on Florida National Friday in a 108-84 win at the Health & Sports Center. It was the first time this season the Bucs scored over 100 points.

The 108 points fell seven points shy of the school record set on Dec. 12, 1999 when the Bucs dropped 115 on Puerto Rico-Humacao.

Barry (4-1) set a school record with 19 steals, bettering a 13-year record. Yunio Barrueta had a career-high six steals, and Elvar Fridriksson had a career-best five as the Buccaneers forced 24 turnovers.

Barrueta finished with 30 points and seven rebounds, and Fridriksson had his first double-double, scoring 18 points and dishing out 14 assists. Anders Haas had 23 points, knocking down four of six triples, and Tray Leonard had 14 points, five boards and three steals as four Bucs starters reached double figures.

The Bucs shot 50 percent in both halves, taking a 54-36 lead into halftime. Florida National (4-5) cut the gap to 10 just over two minutes into the second half. But Leonard scored at the 11:51 mark to push the lead 21, and Fridriksson canned one of his four 3-pointers to extend the gap to 31 with 7:05 to go.

Quantavis Hall had 17 points, Marcus Morrison had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Regan O'Rourke had 12 points, six assists and seven boards for the Conquistadors, who outrebounded the Bucs, 41-39. Alvaro Simoza, who transferred from Barry to Florida National, had 11 points on five of nine shooting.

Barry scored 48 points in the paint, and gave up 46. The Bucs outscored the Conquistadors, 36-16, in transition.

Marko Tomic had eight points, six rebounds and three steals. David Sachs scored seven for the Buccaneers, who improved to 4-0 at home this season.

Barry will play a non-conference game at Shaw 8 p.m. Monday before returning home to host Lynn in a big Sunshine State Conference game 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. It is the final home game in 2015 for the Bucs, who will play four of their next five games away from the HSC.
