MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Coming off a 2-1 mark in the pre-season, including a 70-62 win over FIU, the Barry University women's basketball team opens the season today at the Nova Southeastern Tipoff Classic against the Lee Flames at 2:30 pm.
The Bucs defeated Miami-Dade and FIU in the preseason and fell to Florida Atlantic, while Lee defeated Maryville in their only exhibition.
Barry is coming off a 15-16 campaign that culminated in a trip to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament finals. Jackie Perez (5-8, Sr., G) and Amra Elezovic (5-11, Sr., F) are the top returning performers for the Bucs. Perez averaged 11.1 points per game and set a Barry single season record with 75 made three-pointers. Elezovic chipped in 9.9 points and is the top returning rebounder at 5.3 per game. In the pre-season, Elezovic led the team with 17.3 points and 10 rebounds per game. Perez averaged 11.6 and 3.3 assists.
Lee, in their first year of NCAA eligibility, went 23-8 last season and won the NCCAA National Championship. Erin Walsh (5-11, So., G) is the top returning player for the Flames. She averaged 14.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Christina Johnson (5-10, Sr., F) topped the team with 8.0 rebounds per game and chipped in 6.0 points.
The Bucs face North Alabama on Saturday.
