Volleyball Knocks off No. 15 Florida Southern

Buccaneers notch signature, host Florida Tech Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University volleyball needed this in a big way. Ask and you shall receive.

The Buccaneers beat No. 15 Florida Southern, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, Friday in the Health & Sports Center. It was the Bucs first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 19 West Florida in 2013. It was also Barry's first win over the Moccasins since Nov. 19, 2004.

Barry (9-7, 4-3 Sunshine State Conference) moved a half-match ahead of the Mocs (17-4, 4-4) in the league standings, and will host Florida Tech at 4 p.m. Saturday in another league match. Friday's match was the first of three straight in the HSC for the Buccaneers.

Kaitlin Drake, who had 20 kills for the third time this season, banged down a winner in the first set to put the Buccaneers ahead 20-15. Florida Southern cut it to 21-19 on an attack error by the Bucs, but Eva Raat slammed home two straight kills, and Laine Cielena's block capped the first set.

Barry hit .333 and converted 75 percent of its sideouts in the opening set. The Mocs attacked at an .088 rate. Barry had 19 kills in the opening set.

Neck and neck through the second set, Ariel Mangum served the Bucs to a 20-18 lead. Anna Tovo's kill helped FSC tie things up at 22-22. Cielena's kill, and two more by Drake pushed Barry to a 2-0 lead entering the intermission.

The Bucs made good on 18 of 24 sideout chances for another 75 percent rate. Florida Southern was 17 of 24 for 70 percent in the set.

The Mocs hit .171 in the third set, while the Bucs had an .091 attack percentage, managing nine kills to offset six errors, allowing Florida Southern to draw within a set. But Barry responded in the fourth set, using Jasmine Serna's laser serve in the early going to set the tone. Serna ripped off three of her four aces during a 9-0 run to give the Buccaneers a six-point lead after one change of serve. Cielena banged down a ball to make it 16-9 midway through the set. Drake put away a ball to move the Bucs within five points of closing it out. Ivana Didanovic's ace wrapped it up.

Barry had 10 aces, marking the first time since the second match of the season the Bucs had double-digit service winners. The Bucs had 12 aces against Barton on Sept. 5.

Didanovic hit .345 and had 14 kills and seven blocks. Serna had 27 assists and 21 digs to couple her four aces. Eva Raat had 10 kills. Kat Espinosa and Brittany Jaco combined for 29 of the Bucs' 71 digs.
