Katie Dooley was all smiles.
Steve Hendricks wore a similar look. Indeed, it was a good day to be a Buccaneer.
Barry University polished off its second straight four-set win of the weekend, beating Florida Tech, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18, 27-25, Saturday in the Health & Sports Center. The win marked the fifth time in the last seven matches the Buccaneers won the battle at the net as Barry outblocked Florida Tech 10-5.5.
Barry (10-7, 5-3 Sunshine State Conference) sit alone in third place entering Tuesday's match with Nova Southeastern to begin the second half of league play. The Bucs will host the Sharks at 7 p.m. in a Buccaneers Broadcast Network broadcast.
The Bucs and Panthers (10-10, 2-7) waged through nine ties and four lead changes in the first set before
Katie Dooley put away a ball on one of
Jasmine Serna's 24 assists, and an FIT attack error gave Barry a 1-0 lead. The Buccaneers had a match-high 17 kills in the opening set, overcoming 14 from the Panthers. Florida Tech won the second set, breaking away from a 20-19 lead after
Ivana Didanovic pulled Barry within one, by using a 4-0 run on Ashtin Truesdale's serve to send the match into intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
Barry came out firing in the pivotal third set, sprinting to a 13-3 lead behind
Jenny Trinidad's two aces in a 7-0 run. Tech eventually cut it to four, 22-18, on a kill by Marilyn Dick. But
Kaitlin Drake's kill gave the Bucs one of their 13 sideouts, and
Ariel Mangum clinched the third set with two service points, including an ace. Mangum finished with a season-high two of the Bucs' six aces, and had seven digs.
The Buccaneers hit .367 in the third set, committing a match-low three attack errors, while making good on 72 percent of its sideouts during the pivotal third set that witnessed only one lead change and two ties. Barry used the momentum to swing into the fourth set, never relinquishing control of the lead despite drawing even with the Panthers on four occasions to put the match away. Dooley's kill early in the fourth put Barry ahead 8-2, but Florida Tech rallied to draw even at 23 on a kill by Dick. After Olivia Hersey kept the score tied at 25, Dooley banged down her 10th and 11th kills, the latter on Mangum's serve, to complete the weekend sweep.
Dooley hit .321, and had three block assists. Drake had 11 kills,
Eva Raat 12 with four blocks, and Didanovic 10 kills and five blocks, while hitting five errors. Trinidad had 20 assists and two aces.
Brittany Jaco had 26 digs, and
Kat Espinosa 21. Dick and Hersey each had 11 kills, and Truesdale 41 assists for the Panthers, who hit .148.Â
Saturday's match was the second this season in which four Buccaneers recorded double-digit kills. The Bucs also did it against Lynn on Sept. 29.Â
