CARROLLTON, Ga. -- Barry University's volleyball team finished the South Region Region Crossover with a 2-1 weekend record, following a four-set loss to No. 18 West Florida Saturday at The Coliseum on West Georgia's campus.
Barry (8-6) will play at No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic 7 p.m. Tuesday before returning home Friday to host Florida Southern.
The Buccaneers overcame a 2-0 deficit with a spirited third-set rally to send the match into a fourth set. A see-saw battle throughout the third set swung the Bucs way when
Jenny Trinidad banged home a kill for a 22-22 tie on one of
Jasmine Serna's 21 assists. Following a timeout by West Florida (18-4), the Argonauts were guilty of an attack error by Rachel Neblett that gave Barry the lead. The Argos pulled ahead by one, but
Kat Espinosa's kill knotted the score at 24-24. Another error by Neblett and
Ivana Didanovic's ace gave the Bucs the set win to pull within 2-1.
In the fourth set, Barry trailed 12-8, but went on a 4-0 run to tie the score on one of
Eva Raat's 16 kills. Kills by Raat and
Ivana Didanovic, sandwiched between an Argos error, left the Buccaneers in front,15-14. Both sides traded serves for two more ties before West Florida went ahead 19-17 on a Bucs service error.
Laine Cielena put away one of her eight kills to pull Barry within one, 19-18, but the Argos ran off the next six points to seal the deal.
Corisha Smith had 14 kills and a .400 attack percentage, and Monique StCyr had 44 assists, seven kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Argonauts, who lost their first two matches at the Crossover in a bid to break a school consecutive win streak record.
Barry's .143 attack percentage was the result of 24 errors in 161 swings. West Florida hit .287.
Trinidad finished with 19 assists and seven digs.
Brittany Jaco had 21 digs. Didanovic had eight kills, hitting .368. Cielena had four of Barry's 10 block assists.
Kaitlin Drake had nine kills and nine digs. Espinosa had 16 digs, three kills and an ace. Serna accounted for 12 of the Bucs' 75 digs.Â
West Florida outblocked Barry, 10-5. Barry converted 68 percent of their sideout opportunities in the third set, but the Argos' 83 percent in the first set and 77 percent in the second were too much to overcome.
