CARROLLTON, Ga. -- Barry University's volleyball team will play three matches at the South Region Crossover Friday and Saturday at the University of West Georgia.
The Buccaneers (6-5) meet Alabama Huntsville (15-5) at 10 a.m. Friday in the opening round. Barry also plays Lee (8-8) at 4:45 p.m. Friday. The Bucs will finish the two-day tournament against No. 18 West Florida (17-2) at 12:15 p.m. Saturday. All three opponents are from the Gulf South.
The South Region Crossover pits teams from the Sunshine State Conference and Gulf South Conference against each other in a new seeded format adopted this year. Barry is seeded sixth in the South Region. A total of 22 teams will all compete at West Georgia this weekend. The Crossover signals the midway point in the season.
SERIES HISTORYBarry is 2-0 all-time against Huntsville, both matches decided in 3-0 sweeps. The last time the Bucs and Chargers met, Barry beat Huntsville, 30-23, 30-26, 32-30, at the Rollins Invitational on Aug. 27, 2007 in Winter Park, Fla. Barry beat Huntsville in the first meeting Sept. 24, 1993 in Tampa, 15-1, 15-8, 15-5, before rally scoring was adopted. The Chargers beat West Georgia on Tuesday at home.Â
Barry and Lee have never met. Lee is in its first year as an official NCAA Division II member after completing the third and final year of its provisional status last year. The Flames are coming off a 3-1 loss to Emory University in Atlanta on Tuesday. Â
Barry beat then-No. 19 West Florida in four sets two years ago, also at the South Region Crossover, hosted that year by the Argonauts in Pensacola. That was the only meeting between the two schools.Â
WHAT'S AT STAKEThe Bucs have an opportunity to move up in the South Region rankings with a good showing this weekend at the Crossover.Â
CROSSOVER HISTORYBarry is 6-1 in its last two South Region Crossover appearances -- its only loss during that span a five-setter. Barry went 3-0 last year in Winter Park. Â
