CARROLLTON, Ga. – Call it a sweep sweep.
Barry University's volleyball team swept two matches Friday at the South Region Crossover at West Georgia. It improved the Buccaneers record to 8-1 in the last three South Region events against the Gulf South Conference.
Barry (8-5) will play No. 18 West Florida at 12:15 p.m. Saturday to cap the weekend.
The Buccaneers beat Alabama-Huntsville, 25-11, 25-14, 25-16, in the opening game at The Coliseum Barry had little resistance with the Chargers, hitting .361 in the first set with only one attack error. The Bucs committed only two hitting errors in the second set, putting away 12 balls for a .286 percentage.
Barry, which hit a season-high .292, held Huntsville (15-6) to an .043 hitting percentage. The Chargers had 30 kills and 25 errors in 117 swings. The Bucs' eight attack errors were four less than its previous season low against Barton on the opening weekend.
Laine Cielena had a season-high eight kills and four blocks, hitting .350.
Katie Dooley had seven kills, no errors and six blocks, including a pair of solos.
Kaitlin Drake had nine kills and 15 digs, and
Eva Raat had seven kills.
Brittany Jaco had 21 digs, and
Jasmine Serna 18 assists and nine digs.
Jenny Trinidad had 15 digs. Kendall Knisley had seven kills, and Kirsten Giles 21 assists and 10 digs for the Chargers.
Barry outblocked Huntsville, 10-2.
In the second match against Lee, a first-year NCAA Division II member, Barry hit .252, which included a .324 attack rate in the third set.
The Bucs outblocked the Flames, 10-3, marking the third straight opponent and sixth overall this season Barry has beaten at the net.
Serna had 18 assists, 14 digs and three aces, triggering an offense where attack distribution was balanced and banging. Cielena had seven kills and hit .375. Dooley had eight kills, and hit .467. Raat had nine kills, and hit .421.
Ivana Didanovic had seven kills, and hit .400. Drake had eight kills. Jaco had 14 digs, and
Kat Espinosa, who put the first match on ice with a terminating kill, had 11 digs , four blocks and an ace.
Dooley had eight blocks, and Cielena three. Trinidad had 13 assists. Brooke Wilsman had 11 kills for the Flames (8-10).
Barry's two sweeps improved the Bucs record to 3-1 in three-set matches, with the lone loss to defending national champion Tampa on the road.
Lee had a .106 attack percentage, committing 25 errors. Barry had 12 hitting errors, matching their second lowest of the season.
The Bucs match with the Argonauts will mark the third ranked opponent this season, and second time in three years Barry will meet West Florida in the Crossover.
