TAMPA, Fla. -- Still shorthanded, Barry University's volleyball team gave defending NCAA Division II champion Tampa a good test in the opening set before falling in three on the road Thursday night.
The Buccaneers lost 25-20, 25-11, 25-15, snapping a three-match win streak at the hands of the No. 2-ranked team in the country, who were granted special arrangements to play the Sunshine State Conference match on a Thursday.
Barry (5-4, 3-2 SSC) found itself in a 10-4 deficit in the first set, but closed to within three, 16-13 on a Tampa mistage -- Allee Stelogeannis' setting error. After the Spartans (10-3, 4-0) bumped their lead back to five, the Buccaneers used kills by
Ivana Didanovic and
Kaitlin Drake to pull within, 20-17. Drake added another putaway to cut it to 22-20, but Tampa secured the final three points to pull out the opening and most-contested set.
The Bucs hit .189 in the opening set, converting 56 percent of their sideout percentages. Barry had 10 of its 23 kills in the opening set. The Spartans used 17 kills to account for all but eight of their points in the set, hitting .277.
Barry managed 13 kills in the ensuing two sets, and committed 12 attack errors to finish with an .083 hitting percentage. Tampa hit .327, including .429 in the final set.
Drake had nine kills, and
Eva Raat had eight.
Katie Dooley had a solo block in the third set that pulled Barry within a point, 14-13, bu the Spartans went on a 6-1 run to put the match out of reach.
Brittany Jaco had 15 of Barry's 45 digs and an ace.
Jasmine Serna had 10 assists, eight digs and a block.
The Buccaneers will host Rollins Oct. 9 to begin a two-match weekend homestand.
