ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—The second-ranked Barry University women's tennis team rolled past the Cameron Aggies 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament on Wednesday evening. Barry only surrendered seven games in the five matches they won.
In doubles action, the Bucs took all three matches, winning in near-record time. At the top flight, the second-ranked team of
Angie Werschel and
Barbi Pocza beat #15 Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber 8-2.
In the second flight, #22
Laura Boguet and
Alex Gwizdowski beat Sara Londono and Elvira Sholles 8-4. Though the Bucs and Aggies split the first eight games, the Bucs won the final four to win the set.
In singles competition, the Bucs only needed two points to take the win. Boguet earned the Buccaneers' fifth point as she beat Londono in near perfection, 6-1, 6-0.
Third-ranked Pocza finished it out for the Bucs. Pocza was impeccable against #19 Amanda Moberg, winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Bucs led in three of the remaining four singles matches.
Caroline Wendling, ranked #44, was up 6-1, 2-1 on Sholles in the third flight. Matuszak led Londono 6-0, 4-1 at No. 4.
Mona Mansour was up a set on Florencia Torento 6-1, 5-0.
With the win, the Bucs move on to face #27 Concordia in the quarterfinal of the national tournament. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. Fans can stay tuned to the
