MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—
Bobby Hernandez tossed a six-hit shutout and
John Servidio and
Carlos Gomez each drove in two runs as the Barry Buccaneers took the first game of a Sunshine State Conference baseball series from the Nova Southeastern Sharks 9-0 at Feinbloom Field on Friday night.
The Bucs (31-15, 10-9 SSC) jumped out on top in the first inning off Sharks' starter Ruddy Garcia (8-2).
Nick Shaw drew a leadoff walk and
Andrew Frezza singled with one out. Servidio followed with a base hit up the middle to score Shaw and both he and Frezza came around on a two-run double by Gomez.
That would prove to be all the offense Hernandez (6-0) needed as he mowed down the Sharks (27-19, 11-6 SSC). He scattered six hits and three walks and struck out five for his first complete game shutout. Garcia took the loss for NSU. He allowed all nine runs (three earned) on 12 hits and two walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings.
Shaw and Keefe each had three hits to lead the Bucs at the plate. Servidio and Shaw each scored twice. Dale Alberto, who also made three errors, led the Sharks with two hits.
The Sharks had one golden opportunity to score in the seventh inning. Eric McCans was hit by Hernandez with one out. David Robinson followed with a double down the left field line one out later. McCans would have scored easily, but the ball rolled under a gap in the fence and he was forced to return to third. Hernandez got Matt Mindick to fly out to right field to end the inning.
The teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
