ST. LEO, Fla. – The Barry University baseball team (28-10, 9-4 SSC) defeated Saint Leo University 3-1 in the first of a three game Sunshine State Conference (SSC) series on Friday evening at Southard Field.

Led by stellar pitching, Bobby Hernandez (5-0) pitched eight complete innings, allowing four hits but only one run. Brian Milanes came in for his sixth save of the year to close out the game for the Bucs. Ryan Clark (2-6) suffered the loss for the Lions.

In the top of the first, lead-off batter Nick Shaw pounded a solo home run over the right field fence to give Barry an early 1-0 lead. Saint Leo (23-16, 5-9 SSC) responded in their respective half inning when Yunior Tabares hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Kyle Hobbs from third to tie the game at one apiece.

In the fifth, Mitch Rodriguez belted another solo home run to increase Barry's lead 2-1. In the final inning, John Servidio scored from third to give the Buccaneers an added insurance run.

Shaw led Barry with two hits, one run, and one RBI, while Rodriguez added one run, one hit, and one RBI. Bobby Munoz had two hits for the Lions while three other players recorded one hit each.

The Buccaneers and Lions conclude their three game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Apr. 12.
