LAKELAND, Fla. -- The eight-ranked Barry University softball team (36-10, 17-5 SSC) dropped the first of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series to the third-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins (48-4, 19-3 SSC) 2-0 at Barnett Field on Friday night.
With the SSC title on the line, the Moccasins managed to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Florida Southern's Sarah Kohlbrenner reached on a one-out single and later took advantage of a Buccaneer error to score the go-ahead run.
Later, in the sixth, Florida Southern added to their lead when Jackie Leppla led off with a double and Michelle Tatlock picked up the RBI on a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 win.
The Buccaneer managed to scatter four hits over seven innings getting singles from
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.),
Kim Fujimoto (Sr., Carmichael, Calif.),
Brittany Anderson (Fr., Chandler, Ariz.), and
Cristina DeTagle (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.). Florida Southern collected five hits in the game led by Kohlbrenner who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave up two runs (one earned), walked one and struck out three in the loss for Barry falling to 16-4 on the season. Megan Brown (24-2) hurled the seven inning four-hit shutout and struck out four in the win for Florida Southern.
Both teams will have a one-day rest before concluding the series on Sunday, Apr. 30 at 1 pm with a doubleheader.
