MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers swept a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader from the Eckerd Tritons 19-1 and 8-3 on Saturday at Feinbloom Field.
The Buccaneers (30-17-1, 9-9 SSC) hit early and often in game one, sending 13 men to the plate in the first inning as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead.
Andrew Frezza had a single, double and drove in three in the inning, scoring twice as did
Alex Meneses.
Cesar Aranguren made it 11-0 in the third inning with a two-run double, scoring Frezza and Meneses again.
After the Tritons (13-28, 4-14 SSC) scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh as Mike Ferraina scored on an error, the Bucs plated three more runs in the bottom of the inning with Aguiar adding another RBI double and Lorenzo following with a run-scoring single.
Jayson Brown (6-4) tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout ball, walking three and striking out 10 to get the win.
Greg Dicso worked the last three innings, surrendering just two hits and walk with one unearned run to earn his first save.
In the second game, the Tritons jumped on top in the third inning. Jason Recore lead off with a double and scored on a single by Mike Ruggieri. A sacrifice fly by Grant Massie brought in Ruggieri for a 2-0 Triton lead.
In the bottom of the inning, back-to-back doubles by Meneses and Frezza cut the lead to 2-1. But with Frezza at second and Aranguren at first after a walk,
Nick Corbeil, trying to lay down a bunt, popped up to first baseman Alfredo Cabale with the runners on the move and Cabale fired to Jason Recore covering first to catch Aranguren and the relay to Jeff Bromley was in time at second to complete the triple play.
Orestes Gonzalez knotted the game at 2-2 with a long solo homer in the fourth. But the Tritons got doubles from Cabale and Ferraina in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
But Barry batted around in the sixth inning off Triton starter Joe Sinicola (2-7).
Nick Corbeil drove in Frezza with a single to tie the game and, with the bases loaded, Gonzalez drew a walk to bring in Aranguren with the go-ahead run.
Brett Rossi followed with a grand slam to make it 8-3 Barry.
Bobby Hernandez improved to 3-0 with 2.2 innings in relief of starter
David Bernat. Hernandez allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Sinicola took the loss for the Tritons, allowing all eight runs on eight hits and five walks with two strikeouts.
The Bucs will travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., on Tuesday to face the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at 6:00 pm.
