ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) was one base shy of a cycle and went 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead the eight-ranked Barry University softball team (31-7, 13-3 SSC) to an 11-0 Sunshine State Conference win over the Eckerd Tritons (13-33, 2-14 SSC) on Friday night at Turley Field to open the series.
Barry managed to scatter three hits over the first three innings, but stranded five on the bases including a bases loaded second inning. The Buccaneers finally broke the scoreless streak in the fourth and scored three runs on three hits, while taking advantage of two Triton errors.
Cristina DeTagle (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) drove in the Bucs' first run with an RBI single and Rider doubled in a pair to give Barry a 3-0 after four.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Barry added four more runs in the sixth ignited by Rider's two-run homer.
Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) plated a run with an RBI single and
Katie Arnone (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) drove in a fourth run with a fielder's choice RBI that gave the Buccaneers a 7-0 lead.
The Buccaneers continued to add to their lead in the seventh when
Ali Perantoni (So., Miami, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch.
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) extended the Bucs lead with an RBI sacrifice fly, but
Maile Keeney (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) slammed the door with a two-run home before closing out the inning to lift Barry to an 11-0 shutout victory.
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) hurled a seven-inning three-hit shutout and struck out nine to improve to 14-3 on the season. Jenn Barnes (6-21) gave up 11 runs and scattered 11 hits over seven inning in the loss for Eckerd.
Rider picked up a single, a pair of doubles, a home run, and four RBI to lead Barry at the plate. Her two doubles in the game gave her 16 on the year which ties her for first on Barry's single season list. Keeney went 2-for-5 with a single, a home run, and picked up a pair of RBI. The homer was the 17th of her career which slots her first on Barry's all-time career home run list. She also continued to increase her RBI to 43 on the season which is a single season best.
Both teams will meet for the final two games of the series on Saturday, Apr. 15 at 1 pm.
