Baseball Swamps Palm Beach Atlantic

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Orestes Gonzalez hit two towering home runs and drove in five as the Barry Buccaneers swamped the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 12-3 at Feinbloom Field on Wednesday night.

The Bucs (22-11-1) got off to a fast start in the first inning. The first six batters reached base against Sailfish starter Joel Gossett (1-8), including long home runs from Gonzalez and Nick Corbeil.

The Sailfish (9-28) cut the lead in half in fourth inning. Kris Wellmaker had a two-run single after they loaded the bases and Joel Hartman scored on an error.

But the Bucs used the long ball to bust the game open in the fifth inning. With one out, Brian Martinez walked and went to second on a single by Brett Rossi. Danny Aguiar drew a pass to load the bases and Alex Meneses delivered a run win an infield hit. Jerry Thornton brought in Rossi with a walk and Andrew Frezza lifted a sacrifice fly to score Aguiar. Meneses came across on a wild pitch and Gonzalez capped the frame with his second homer.

Bobby Riley ran his record to 4-0 with seven strong innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk, striking out five. Gossett was roughed up for 12 earned runs on 11 hits. He walked six and struck out two in 4.2 innings.

Meneses' run in the fifth inning gave him 188 for his career, passing Rey Breto (1996-99) for the most in Barry history. He also rapped out three hits to move past Irain Gonzalez (1998-2001) for second place on the Buccaneer hit chart with 238.

Frezza and Rossi each had two hits for the Bucs, as did Gonzalez. Shelton Stevens led the Sailfish with two hits.

The Bucs travel to Boca Raton, Fla., this weekend for a Sunshine State Conference series against the Lynn Knight. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon as does Sunday's single game.
